A SHORT HISTORY OF QUEENSWAY
Queensway is 12 acres of open grassland in the village of Hazlemere in Buckinghamshire, just a stones throw from Hazlemere crossroads. A large open space of green meadow, Queensway is a place that we hope will soon become a Tranquil Park - a field that will be held in trust, for present and future generations to enjoy forever. Queensway field and allotments nestle quietly at the end of a small cul-de-sac, also called Queensway, just off the A404 Amersham Road in Hazlemere. Before Wycombe District Council bought the field from the three Parishes of Penn, Hughenden and Chepping Wycombe, it was for a considerable time freely being used by the local residents for sundry leisure, mostly quiet exercise such as kite flying, walking, dog walking and the like. Over the years there had been many other suggestions to use the space commercially: for a Park & Ride, a displaced running track and a plan for over 200 more allotments - mostly for non Hazlemere residents. There were even rumours that a major supermarket wanted the land! Local Hazlemere resident Mrs Wanda Brown had the idea of securing Queensway for the people, by turning it into a "Tranquil Park", including some of the space being used for just a few more allotments to supplement the 30 already there. Having seen the many different plans suggested and then challenged over a number of years, Wanda decided it was time to put a new plan on the table for a very different non-commercial use for Queensway and so she approached her District Councillor Ron Gaffney for advice on how she could progress the idea and turn it into a reality. Supporting Prince William's request for 2012 recreational areas to be created to celebrate his grandmother's Diamond Jubilee next year, Ron thought this well timed idea would provide a great opportunity for the people of Hazlemere, to pay tribute to our current Queen and commemorate her 60 years on the throne! Ron and Wanda realised that a team of people with various skills would be needed, so they invited Wanda's husband David to join them as the start of the team that would become the committee of the "Friends of Queensway Tranquil Park" [FQTP]. Two of Hazlemere's Parish Councillors Karen Farrell and John Rhodes joined, along with the Parish Council's Chair - Judy Weaver. Ray Levy who is also the current committee member of the Queensway Allotment Society and a resident of Queensway came onboard and everyone pledged to contribute their time and skills to the challenge of protecting the Queensway fields and helping progress plans to create a "Tranquil Park" for the community. Together they all became the "Friends of Queensway Tranquil Park" [FQTP} The FQTP approached the Bucks New University in High Wycombe and secured the help of Ben Rose, a 3rd year design student at the New University. Ben is currently creating designs for the development of Queensway, which we hope to be able to share with you soon. Joining him is Bens' course tutor David Barrass, head of Spacial Design at the Bucks New University, who will be supervising Ben with the project. British Flora have agreed to advise about the seeds and will be suggesting suitable planting to encourage wild life, insects, butterflies and birds to the park, helping to create and preserve habitats.
